Tall Glass
How is it that those tall glass candles explode?
Im talking about those “7 day candles” that sometimes come in plain colors or pictures of the Virgin Mary, Jesus, etc on them. I heard they sometimes explode when the flame is about to run out. How is it that this happens?
Can you provide a link for me?
PHYSICS YOU MORON!
The glass varies in thickness in these cheaply made glasses. When the candle is doing ordinary burning, the heat from the flame is cushioned by the cooler unmelted wax. When it reaches the bottom and all the wax is melted, especially if there is metal disk at the bottom of the wick, the temperature goes up rapidly and if the wick and flame drift closer to one side, the glass will get locally hot with a better chance of cracking. If the glass is poorly annealed (cooled too quickly) once it begins to break, it will come apart pretty dramatically.
