Why is the “lava” in my lava lamp stuck to the sides of the lamp?

Is there any way to shake the lava from the sides of the glass? Or is this simply a sign of age?

Switch your lava lamp on, for around 30 minutes and it should heat up enough.
If it doesnt move then it is a sure sign of age
