Class Notes - November 1, 2008

Rewritable Holograms

University of Arizona optical scientist, Savas Tay, created a three-dimensional holographic display that can be erased and rewritten in a matter of minutes. The device is said to have uses in the industrial and medical fields, however, the Air Force is very interested in using the technology for military applications and seems willing to pay for it.

TechShop - A Collaborative Technology Environment

TechShop bills itself as a fully-equipped open-access workshop and creative environment. Their slogan “Build Your Dreams Here” focuses on the any time access to work on projects of your choice. Classes and Seminars are offered by those who know to those who wish to know, creating a collaborative learning environment. The founder, Jim Newton, believes it is a health club with tools and equipment instead of exercise equipment or as he calls it a Kinko’s for geeks. The idea is now franchising with another opening in North Carolina and up to ten more being created throughout the country.

Classrooms need to improve even if you get inferior teachers with painful subjects. The goal is to teach and learn. The equipment available to the classroom can make it successful.

Campus Wide and even global collaboration should be a goal.

Find out how the students feel about their learning environment.

There should be freedom and mobility of the learning environment.
